To train your students for the exame de código (the theory test) and follow their progress, there are two kinds of platform. Distance-learning (e-learning) platforms certified by IMT (the national transport authority, Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes) can count towards the hours of the theory module of driving instruction, and they also record each student’s progression and assessment.

Training and tracking platforms do not count hours and focus on measuring who is ready for the exam. Via Rápida is of the second kind: it is not on IMT’s table of certified platforms, so it does not count towards the 16 hours of the theory module.

What the law allows for distance learning

The rules are in Portaria 185/2015 (a ministerial ordinance), which implements the legal regime of driving instruction (Law 14/2014). The consolidated version in the Diário da República (the official gazette), which merges all amendments into a single text, includes the latest amendment (Ordinance 302/2026/1 of 20 July), which did not change the rules on distance-learning platforms.

  • Duration. For a first licence, the theory module has a minimum of 16 hours for the subjects common to all categories. Categories A1, A2 and A add four more hours, and C1, C, D1 and D add 12.
  • Certification. You can use distance-learning tools in this module, but only if IMT has certified them.
  • Records. The platform must record the student, the instructor in charge, the start and end dates, the hours spent on the platform, the progression, and the formative assessment.
  • Daily limit. Each student can be on the platform for four hours a day at most.
  • Reporting to IMT. The company that runs the school tells IMT which platform it wants to use in each school and gives IMT access for consultation and audit.

Another rule in the same ordinance matters day to day: when a student fails the theory test (prova teórica), they have to do five more hours of the theory module. Knowing who is ready before booking the exam saves time for the student and the school.

What “certified by IMT” means

The conditions are set out in a decision (deliberação) of IMT’s board (Conselho Diretivo) from August 2020. Among the minimum requirements are these:

  • no advertising and no links to advertising;
  • individual access, with a username and password, for the person teaching, the person learning and IMT, which supervises;
  • training data sent to the school’s records application automatically, with no way of altering it;
  • a record of the day, time, duration, content viewed and assessment results of each student, in a report that can be exported as a PDF.

IMT’s table lists three certified platforms: Ensino à Distância from Edições Segurança Rodoviária, Proexamweb from Pugnatrix, and Testesdecodigo.com from Edições Alves Costa.

The platforms we checked

Only platforms that describe, on a public page, the product they offer to schools (features and, where there is one, the price) are in the table.

Platform Price (Oct 2026) Student tracking IMT-certified e-learning Questions and explanations Own brand or app Categories

Via Rápida for schools. Each school has an invitation code, students join with it and practise for free, with their own account. Besides the tests, students get the study material in chapters with simulators, a free book, a road-sign game (Sprint), a 3D driving game and the traffic board (Quadro de trânsito), which the school can project in the classroom.

The dashboard shows each student’s readiness index, a traffic light for ready or at risk, and exam alerts. There are three plans with published prices (plus tailored offers for groups and chains), at a final price (VAT-exempt), with the annual plan priced at 10 months: Start (€29 a month, up to 15 active students), Pro (€79 a month, unlimited students, school tests with the school’s own questions, shared by link, QR code or code) and Max (€149 a month, AI question drafts).

The site with the school’s own brand and the school’s own app appear as “coming soon”. Archived students do not count towards the limit. You cancel in the dashboard, with no lock-in, and the study data stays with the student.

What it lacks: it is not on IMT’s table of certified e-learning platforms. The time a student spends on it does not count towards the 16 minimum hours of the theory module or towards the five extra hours after a failed test, and the school cannot report it to IMT as a distance-learning platform. It also does not replace management software. Students use it in the browser; the app for iPhone and iPad is not yet on the App Store.

Proexamweb (Pugnatrix). It is on IMT’s table and says it has been certified since 2021 for category B and since 2024 for all categories. The modules include official IMT tests, e-learning, an ebook, the school manual, statistics, notices to students and API integration, a direct connection to other systems.

The Ligeiro plan (€30 a month) has only tests and the ebook. E-learning comes in from Base (€65 a month, two categories). Pro (€75 a month) adds more categories, including AM, and Pro Extra (€85 a month) adds TVDE (initial and renewal), FIAC-140C and FIAD-140D. You can pay monthly, every six months or annually, and on the annual plan you pay for 11 months: Base comes to €715 a year. The page does not say whether prices include VAT, and the app is listed as “coming soon”.

When to choose Proexamweb: you want distance-learning hours to count, with a published price, and you teach several categories or TVDE. Via Rápida has published a direct comparison with Proexamweb (in Portuguese).

Segurança Rodoviária (Ensino à Distância). The publisher gives the school access to the platform, and the school enrols each student.

The content follows the topics of the publisher’s books, with set time per page and queries sent to the instructor by email. Each topic ends in a compulsory assessment test, and there is an exam test at the end. The platform sends the training data to the school’s management software, and the website has a directory of participating schools. It does not publish a price for schools.

For the classroom, the publisher also sells the “Sala Virtual” software, with tests, videos and an on-screen magnetic board. In the online shop it costs €1,230 including VAT, and that price covers the software only. Separately, it sells a physical magnetic junction board and theory classrooms.

When to choose Segurança Rodoviária: you already use this publisher’s books and want a certified e-learning platform with the same topic structure.

AutoviaTest. It is mainly driving school management software, with student records, scheduling, fleet, payments and portals for students, parents and instructors. It includes a theory test engine: more than 50,000 questions from 68 countries, with IMT among the bodies it supports.

It is in early access, the page is in English and the price is on request. It offers a 14-day free trial with no card needed and no joining fee, and set-up and data migration are free.

When to choose AutoviaTest: what you want is to run the whole school in one system, and the theory tests are an extra.

Testesdecodigo.com is also on IMT’s table, but the site only shows an entry page, so it was left out of the comparison table.

When to choose Testesdecodigo.com: you already use books from Edições Alves Costa and want a certified e-learning platform; ask the publisher for its terms.

Testes-Código (testes-codigo.pt) shows a list of partner schools and presents the partnership as more visibility and advantages in the Premium version, but it does not publish the terms.

When to choose Testes-Código: you want visibility for your school in a test app with versions for iOS, Android and Huawei AppGallery.

How to choose

First decide whether the hours need to count. If you want to teach the theory module, or part of it, at a distance, only a platform on IMT’s table will do. If classes stay in the classroom, you are looking for a practice platform that shows you who is ready.

  • What the instructor sees. Ask for a demo of the dashboard by topic and by student, with the test history.
  • Who pays. Check whether students use the platform for free or whether access is part of the enrolment fee.
  • Categories. Confirm that the platform covers every category you teach, not just B.
  • Records. With certified e-learning, check how the data reaches your school’s records application.
  • Student data. Ask who keeps the history if you cancel and how you export the data.
  • Trying it. Start with one class in the free period, if there is one.

You can combine the two: a certified platform for the theory hours and a practice one to measure readiness. The certified ones already include tests and a record for each student (Proexamweb also advertises readiness statistics for each student); a practice platform only adds something if you want another way of seeing who is ready. What candidates compare is in how to choose a driving school. The tools students use on their own are in apps and websites for the theory test.
